Our Chemical Problem Part 1, as featured in the APN newspapers:
Currently there are over 80, 000 chemicals being sold and used in Australia and the US, with new chemicals appearing monthly.
Only approximately 1000 have been tested for human safety! And there are no policies in place forcing manufacturers to list the chemicals they use, they happily hide under the excuse of “confidentiality”, when in fact, we have a right to know what we are using and putting into our bodies, do we not?
I interviewed two of Australia’s top scientists in the field of environmental chemicals and health, Professor Peter Sly and Professor Barry Noller from The University of Queensland.
“When you walk into a supermarket and buy a product off the shelf, you expect that the safety of its use has been already verified. That you can trust the food, drink or household item you are placing in your basket as NOT being dangerous for human contact.
It’s not our job as a consumer to be our own environmental officer, and yet that’s the position we’re in right now. It’s not acceptable.
We can directly link increases in chemical exposure to childhood illnesses and behavioral problems.”. Says Professor Sly.
We are using these chemicals everyday, absorbing them through our soaps, perfumes, shampoo’s, cockroach bombs and hygienic surface sprays, impregnated into our clothing, food and drink containers, baby bottles, new furniture, ingesting them through foods drinks and inhaled from dust particles.
In the US, rates of ADHD are varied with lows of 5.6% in some states and highs of 18.7% in others.
While In 2012, 1 in 63 Australian children were formally diagnosed with autism. And it’s rising!
As a population this means it is now 10 times less likely for a genius to be born!!
